My "hubby" Gorbachev
I've been learning Russian in order to get in touch with my Uzbek roots. We had to choose a Russian name, and I chose "Raya". That was all well and good, except that it's the name of Gorbachev's wife.

I wonder why they never had us pick a German name in any of my German classes. My Spanish name was "Charlana." I think my German name would be "Karola." Maybe "Karl" would be more fun. Though I'm very partial to "Knut."

"Knut" is a very proper Scandinavian name, much better than "Karl". You cannot be Karl! Es ist verboten!

In German class, they just pronounced my name auf Deutsch, and some other people did choose a German name. Perhaps your instructor was broken.

I've had numerous instructors, both in California and in Bavaria. Germans cannot pronounce my name anyway, one would think they would insist on giving me a new name.

I wish to take Italian, but my name is impronouncable by Italians. Perhaps I should go with "Lupo."

I work with russians; I hear enough about how evil the jews are and how stupid the Georgians are, and how democracy is a CIA plot without hearing it in the original language. Plus, all Russian women are psychotic breeder beeyatches who resemble Baba Yaga.

I would rather learn Italian. "Hey Vinny; how 'bout some veeeeeno?"

I am not sure that Italians are much better, but whatever makes you happy. The 20-something Russian girls are hot. That's reason enough to learn Russian.
